The Clickable Area of a Text Link Is Small
Last Updated: March 28, 2024
Tags: Target Size
Question / Problem
For link text which is a part of a block of text, is it necessary to correct the size of the clickable area, especially the height, if it does not meet the criteria?
Answer / Conclusion
If the text size of the link is the same as the text outside the link, there is no problem.
Explanation
In our guidelines, the specified sizes for clickable/tappable areas (target size) are intended for icons and form controls, and do not apply to text links. Similarly, in WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 2.5.5 Target Size, there’s an exception for inline elements, where targets that are within sentences or text blocks are exempt from the size criteria.
It is true that larger target size makes it easier to interact with, so it is recommended to creatively adjust the content of the text being linked to make its width broader, within feasible limits. However, there is no need to adjust the height solely to meet the target size criteria.
